With accessibility in mind, the house is a single story with a comfortable floor-to-ceiling height. The project site is located in the Ganges Delta off the Bay of Bengal in the Bhola District of Bangladesh. Due to the hot and humid climate, the form of the structure is calibrated to maximize the potential for natural ventilation through a series of perforations. Courtyards are scattered throughout the building mass to provide year-round passive heating, cooling, and daylighting opportunities. Perhaps most importantly, the design of the house is based on the particularities of the client’s needs. The client is a Bangladeshi-born American, but will be living out the last years of their life in their home country. Thus, the needs are such that Western amenities are a requirement for the home, such as mechanical cooling, modern plumbing, and other comfort measures. Active environmental control strategies are paired with passive ones to adapt to the building technologies most commonly used in the region. The client will also require a live-in care provider. This creates a unique set of circumstances where one wing of the home must be designed for accessibility and comfort, the opposing wing will fit the needs of the live-in care provider, and the central spine will be a collective space for both. With aging in place as a primary consideration, the house is organized primarily on a single level with an accessible layout and comfortable ceiling heights. The project site is located in Baldwinsville, NY, across from the Beaver Lake Nature Center, in a region characterized by a cold climate and a heavily forested landscape. The building form is carefully shaped to maximize passive solar gain, protect against prevailing winds, and offer framed views into the surrounding woods. The particularities of the clients’ needs are central to the design of the home. The couple will live in the house year-round, and the space must be flexible enough to welcome their children, extended family, and other guests. A dedicated guest suite ensures privacy for visitors, while common areas remain areas for shared living. High-performance insulation, energy-efficient systems, and natural materials are paired with passive strategies like deep roof overhangs and operable windows to balance energy demands with comfort throughout the seasons. The house is designed not only as a residence for the couple but also as a respectful habitat within the forest ecosystem. The building lightly touches the site, preserving existing trees and minimizing disruption to the natural environment. Native plantings, bird watching, and wild meadows are integrated throughout, fostering a harmonious relationship between human and non-human inhabitants. Diffuse House is a speculative design-research project that challenges the static nature of the single-family house by proposing an adaptable, collective housing model that responds to the contemporary moment. The space will serve as a space for planning, organizing, and fostering collaboration among local residents, activists, and city leaders, as well as the primary home for the client. The existing house was laid out with very little attention given to the living spaces. The bedrooms are small and unusable. We flipped the organization giving more space to the bedrooms and created a galley kitchen with a continuous run from the front to the back of the house. We also adjusted the entry so visitors enter into the community room which is semi-public, allowing for the rest of the home to remain private for the owner. The house was initially purchased from the Greater Syracuse Land Bank, for a modest sum of money in order to revitalize the disinvested neighborhood. A greater ambition of the project is to design multiple properties with the client and to form the Syracuse Community Land Trust. Syracuse serves as a critical case study and prototype for broader development practices, directly linked to policy strategies that reimagine disruptive and divisive infrastructural systems. This project is focused on strategies for equitable housing, productive landscapes, zoning policy, and civic-minded architecture. Our methodology is to work through design-research. We have designed and visualized scenarios to assess the present condition of the freeway and to identify catalytic solutions for creating a future-oriented, sustainable, and livable freeway future. The project will culminate in an exhibition that features our strategic plan, models, and soundscapes that we will present to community members and city collaborators. In many urban recovery projects, proposed solutions are often as problematic as the original structure slated for removal. For example, the proposed replacement for the viaduct is the Community Grid Vision Plan by Dover, Kohl &amp; Partners which gives little to no attention to productive landscapes; the affordable housing plan plays into neo-liberal tropes of for-profit, developer-driven, housing and does not prioritize community stewardship of housing; the affordable housing plan makes no mention for the future of the historic Pioneer Homes development adjacent to I-81 on Almond Street; the plan does not advocate for an overall architectural agenda that embeds civic-minded programs on city-owned land. In contrast, we have proposed a two-phased approach to an alternative possibility: first, to study the “Freeway Present,” or an in-depth look at the present condition of the viaduct and its adjacencies through interviews with main community partners: residents, city council members, and developers. And second, we have speculated through analytical and projective drawings about “Freeway Futures” as a reimagination of the I-81 site as a productive and supportive system for the greater Syracuse community. The ground floor is constructed in concrete and is occupied by a 400 SF commercial or atelier space. This space is malleable and can be defined by the end-user based on their needs, and this further activates the common ground plane. Above the ground floor the rest of the home is stick-framed. The first floor above the commercial space is accessed by an exterior stair (or elevator if needed) and is the primarily collective space of the home, housing kitchen, living, and dining all in 500 SF. The upper two floors are living spaces for a small family, with the uppermost floor operating as a flexible mezzanine. The project considers the effects of gentrification and displacement through the lens of housing in the city of Houston. Housing availability in the city is not unlike the typical offerings of a suburb: single-family homes and multi-family apartment complexes of various sizes and scales, but as housing needs grow, Houston is increasingly looking to middle-scale housing types. Cities across the country deal with housing availability issues due to restrictive zoning laws that hinder the application of multi-family housing at the middle scale. Houston is at the forefront of progressive strategies for filling this absence through its relaxed approach to zoning as well as the excess of spec middle-scale housing projects led by developers. This approach has shown to be useful but is keeping housing ownership out of reach to a large percentage of Houstonians. Houston serves as a critical case study that can be applied to cities throughout the country that are in the midst of addressing a scarcity of affordable housing. Architects can lead this conversation by partnering with Community Land Trusts and producing new strategies for socially-minded housing for not only some but for all.This exhibit includes contributions from TuSA student Research Assistants – Joey, Tomshe, Jose Varela Castillo, and Olivia Vercruysse – and aerial cinematography from Nicholas LiCausi, TuSA Director of Fabrication. this home from the inside-out. The challenge of the project is that the clients began with a spec-home from a builder with little-to-no definition of the interior. We were tasked with the design of the interior spaces for the client who is a young family with a teenager and two small dogs. The 5,000 SF house is sited in a new development outside of Houston and is surrounded by a natural wildlife preserve. Upon entering the home through the foyer, the living room, dining room, and kitchen, are all unified into one large space with floor-to-ceiling glass doors that pivot open to a back porch and connect to a natural water body along a wooden deck. The lower level of the two-story home is the social space of the home. The upper floor of the home is the more private space of the home. Two wings on either side of a shared common space are for the primary and secondary bedrooms. The primary bedroom connects to a large bathroom modeled after a spa and a walk-in closet with a private vanity. Both bedrooms connect to a balcony that overlooks the natural wildlife preserve beyond.
