Bhola House is a single-family residence, designed for a small family, where accessibility, health, and care are of utmost concern. With accessibility in mind, the house is a single story with a comfortable floor to ceiling height. The project site is located in the Ganges Delta off the Bay of Bengal in the Bhola District of Bangladesh. Due to the hot and humid climate, the form of the structure is calibrated to maximize the potential for natural ventilation through a series of perforations. Courtyards are scattered throughout the building mass to provide year-round passive heating, cooling, and daylighting opportunities.
Perhaps most importantly, the design of the house is based on the particularities of the client’s needs. The client is a Bangladeshi-born American, but will be living out the last years of their life in their home country. Thus, the needs are such that Western amenities are a requirement for the home such as mechanical cooling, modern plumbing, and other comfort measures. Active environmental control strategies are paired with passive ones to adapt to the building technologies most commonly used in the region. The client will also require a live-in care provider. This creates a unique set of circumstances where one wing of the home must be designed for accessiblity and comfort, the opposing wing will fit the needs of the live-in care provider, and the central spine will be a collective space for both.
